In the case of one project, the Myers Park Update, my client wanted a home with a more modern look. The house already had excellent bones, but below I’ll show how I went about updating and breathing new life into the rooms.

the entryway

An entryway always makes a key first impression, and in this case, with the goal of making modern updates, I guided my client to go with a more saturated hue. The deep blue trim matches the wall covering and adds a sense of drama to the space.

living and dining room

The clients invested in statement art pieces to grace the walls in the more formal areas of the house. For example, the living room features a beautiful geometric abstract painting by artist Kiki Slaughter. In the dining room, we installed a painting by artist Toni Swarthout represented by Gregg Irby.

kitchen and family room

In the kitchen and family room, we embraced an open and airy floorplan that allowed the home’s ample natural light to shine through. A custom, modern large coffee table is the anchor for family room seating. It’s equal parts functional and stylish!

powder room and staircase

We updated lighting throughout the home, going from from transitional light fixtures to modern light fixtures. Sleek sconces shine in the powder room, while a sculptural chandelier dazzles in the stairway.

Primary suite

Since the bedroom is a space for relaxation, we opted for a tranquil, lighter color palette. A bed with a low upholstered headboard with channels makes it modern. The addition of throw pillows adds variety and texture.

guest suite

The lighter color palette of primary suite contrasts against the darker palette of guest suite. The space features a classic navy blue platform bed with grey bedding. The geometric print of the rug plays off the geometry in the artwork above the bed.

We are fortunate to have many repeat clients that trust LCI’s vision for their home. I greatly enjoy seeing how the same space can transform over the years to meet a client’s ever-changing needs, whether this means redesigning a home for a new phase of life, making modern updates, and more.

Why I Appreciate Vintage Pieces https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/why-i-appreciate-vintage-pieces/ https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/why-i-appreciate-vintage-pieces/#respond Sat, 29 Oct 2022 14:02:44 +0000 https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/?p=36616 While there are so many contemporary retailers offering beautiful furnishings and accessories, I sometimes like to shop for vintage pieces, too. Going the vintage or antique route has so many benefits, particularly at this point in time, where so many furniture delays continue to exist due to supply chain issues. Even before the pandemic hit, though, I always loved scoring secondhand pieces for a number of reasons, which I’ll share below. Here are the main reasons why I always appreciate vintage pieces.

Vintage Pieces are Unique

Most likely, if you find a vintage piece, you won’t happen to know anyone else who has the same exact one. This is excellent if you’re someone who likes to veer beyond the same handful of brands that are having a major moment. Vintage pieces are full of character and personality and tell a story. They’ll always be instant conversation starters when guests stop by your home!

Vintage Pieces are high quality
This is another reason why I Always appreciate vintage pieces: They’re constructed so well. There’s no MDF or particle board present. They’re also long lasting and sturdy, so that you can enjoy them for years to come. What you may be using as a bar table in your living room today can serve as a chest in the nursery five or ten years down the line.

Vintage pieces are eco-friendly

We could all stand to be a little more conscious of the environment, and shopping vintage is one way to go green. By bringing secondhand pieces into your home, you are continuing to utilize these items, which otherwise may end up in a landfill. Note that there are many creative ways to repurpose vintage pieces even if these items don’t initially catch your eye. For example, that wood Chinese Chippendale chair from your grandmother may look fabulous lacquered. Reupholster that settee in a more modern fabric. Don’t be afraid to reuse passed down pieces while altering them to fit your current needs and style.

Vintage pieces are readily available

Going back to my initial statement, I greatly appreciate how vintage and antique pieces are generally readily available and do not require an extensive lead time. Markets like Round Top in Texas and Brimfield in Massachusetts are great places to go if you’re looking to furnish an entire home, but on a day to day basis, don’t hesitate to check out local antique stores in your town. Websites such as 1st Dibs and Chairish are also an excellent resource for heirloom pieces and are extremely well curated, meaning you won’t feel as though you’re sifting through “junk” to find that perfect item.

Now go on and get vintage shopping! You’ll quickly become obsessed with how many gems you can find.

Ways to Maximize Natural Light in the Home https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/ways-to-maximize-natural-light-in-the-home/ https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/ways-to-maximize-natural-light-in-the-home/#respond Wed, 31 Aug 2022 14:00:18 +0000 https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/?p=36544 You may notice that you are in a better mood and more productive in spaces with ample natural light. As the days grow shorter and fall draws near, determining ways to maximize natural light in the home is key. Whether you are designing your home from scratch or enhancing an existing space, there are a few design decisions you can make that will let that natural light shine. To inspire you, I am sharing photos from some of my past projects that reflect ways which maximize natural light in the home!

Ways to maximize natural light in the home for a new build or renovation
When selecting a front door, opt for one with sidelights. Even if you do not specify a glass front door, flanking side windows increase the amount of natural light.
Place ample windows in “work” areas that benefit from natural light, such as kitchens or primary baths. It’s always more pleasant to do tasks such as cooking or cleaning in sunlight.

Ways to Maximize Natural Light in an Existing Space

If you’re not renovating, you can still find ways to maximize natural light in the home using a few design tricks.

When it comes to curtains, select drapery rods that are wide enough to account for the drapery stack back. This way, the drapery panels can rest comfortably on either side of the window without blocking the window panes.

Or in a home with a more modern aesthetic, leave the windows bare. Don’t feel like you need to install drapery panels on every window in order for a room to look “finished”.

In spaces that lack windows like hallways, mirrors are wonderful at bouncing around light. Plus, they can add so much style and personality to a space. Create a wall of smaller mirrors or opt for one oversized piece that truly makes a statement.

Another way to maximize natural light in a home is through paint. I suggest coating a ceiling with high gloss paint and picking lighter paint colors for darker spaces. Paint has the power to make a room feel larger or smaller, and in this instance, you will want to make your space appear bright and airy.
And there you have it—some ways to enhance the amount of natural light all throughout your home. Bring on the sunshine!

Timeless Essentials for the Home https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/timeless-essentials-for-the-home/ https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/timeless-essentials-for-the-home/#respond Mon, 15 Aug 2022 12:24:05 +0000 https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/?p=36509 There are many timeless essentials for the home that I like to include in all of my projects. What I appreciate most about these pieces is that they are eye-catching and elegant but truly will never go out of style.

Pretty Light Fixtures

Statement lighting is a no-fail addition within any space. I love installing chandeliers and sconces that serve as the jewelry of a room. Brass fixtures in particular complement a wide variety of furnishings and are always a classic choice.

textured wall coverings

Another timeless essential for the home is a textured wall covering. Why not add a bit of oomph to your walls in the form of grasscloth wallpaper? This is a favorite of mine, particularly when it comes in a bright, cheerful color like this green. Whether you leave it alone or adorn it with artwork, the wallpaper will add major visual interest to any space. Grasscloth is great for living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms alike.

interesting, coordinated bedding

Bedding should by no means be blah! Coordinated bedding is another timeless essential for the home that oftentimes gets overlooked. Invest in sheets and duvet covers that are not only comfortably but also stylish. White linens with colored details are always en vogue. I love the subtle pop of red incorporated here.

original art

There is just nothing like original art, whether it is an investment piece that has been passed on within a family or just a favorite find by an up and coming local artist. There is something so special about designing a room with works that tell a story and are one of a kind. Whether you enjoy portraits, abstracts, or something in between, you cannot go wrong with a signature piece of art.

pretty chests and antique mirrors

I love a good chest and mirror combination. Vintage wooden chests look lovely in the entryway or placed within the living room where they can even function as a bar cart. Gold ornate mirrors will always be in and are perfect for checking your hair and makeup before dashing out the door.

All of these timeless essentials for the home can be purchased either new or vintage, but I enjoy mixing and matching contemporary pieces with antiques to really add sophistication to any room. Don’t be afraid to select furnishings from a variety of eras, as this will result in a well curated mix.

Bathroom 2022 Trends https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/bathroom-2022-trends/ https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/bathroom-2022-trends/#respond Tue, 12 Jul 2022 17:18:37 +0000 https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/?p=36474 When it comes to 2022 bathroom trends, I am seeing a lot of organic materials and finishes. For example, wood finishes, green and blue hues, and natural stone are quite popular. Below, I’m sharing some of my favorite bathrooms of the moment, which I find to be inspiring.

The bathrooms shown here feature stunning green onyx, which pairs wonderfully with brass or black hardware.

Image

Image

If you prefer a contemporary looking bathroom, light wood is an excellent choice. This space appears airy and welcoming and features sophisticated touches like artful sconces and marble accents.

Image

This light wood bathroom features chic bronze trim. The oversized bronze and white sconces selected for the space really pop and keep the space looking cohesive.

Image

Fluted detailing is also a key bathroom trend for 2022. This design adds a feminine touch to the bathroom. Reeded millwork details are also quite popular and sophisticated looking.

Image

A beautiful Louis style mirror, paired with fluted cabinets, evokes classic European style. Artful accents such as small vases and framed drawings add warmth to the space.

Another bathroom trend I’ve been noticing lately is the use of modern, free-floating stone vanities in powder rooms. These take up less physical space while adding tons of visual interest. A bottom shelf in this space allows room for aesthetically pleasing storage.

Image

This white marble vanity brings a touch of Paris into a Connecticut powder room. How chic are those glass sconces, too?

Whether you choose to follow one of these bathroom trends or combine elements of a few of them, you cannot go wrong.

Decorating a screened porch https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/decorating-a-screened-porch/ https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/decorating-a-screened-porch/#respond Thu, 26 May 2022 15:00:31 +0000 https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/?p=36447 The screened porch is such an integral part of many homes in the south. The porch is a welcoming place to gather with family and friends while avoiding the presence of critters and extreme heat. It also bridges the gap between indoors and out and presents so many decorating opportunities.

I find myself inspired by screened porches that essentially feel just like family rooms. Have fun with color and pattern the way you would indoors and don’t hesitate to incorporate artful accessories. Vases, coffee table books, mirrors, and even floor lamps can look wonderful on screened porches; there’s no need to solely relegate these pieces to the indoors.

Image

The screened porch shown here is an excellent example of a space that offers both form and function. I was immediately drawn to the adorable scalloped coffee table and wicker side table present in the space; they’re so chic while being extremely practical. Think about how you plan to use this space when selecting your furniture. If you picture sitting outdoors as you sip your morning coffee or unwind with a cocktail, a side table is essential. Alternatively, if you see the porch being a space in which you’ll enjoy meals with the entire family, you’ll want to opt for a dining table and set of chairs. Additionally, a coffee table makes it easy to set up shop to work from home via the porch when the weather is pleasant. There is no right or wrong way to use a screened porch, so prioritize your lifestyle and household needs first.

A rug can also make a screened porch feel more defined and cozy. I am always a fan of a classic striped rug as shown here, which complements so many styles of furniture.

Image

Wicker furniture looks lovely on a screened porch. Above, designer Ariel Okin incorporated many different types of wicker pieces on her own screen porch. She also played with various textiles and patterns to make the space truly pop. Don’t shy away from prints that speak to you, as pattern adds so much personality to a space.

Image

Mixing different color schemes can also bring a playful touch to the screen porch. Here, various types of striped pieces play together nicely and make a sophisticated statement.

All in all, the screened porch is about relaxation and fun, so don’t forget that during the design process. Bring in the wicker, color, and pattern, and you’ll have a perfect porch.

Kitchen Trends 2022 https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/kitchen-trends-2022/ https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/kitchen-trends-2022/#respond Tue, 26 Apr 2022 19:20:40 +0000 https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/?p=36382 The kitchen is where my family starts the day together, as well as a place for homework sessions, after school snacks, and dinner. When it comes to the most popular kitchen design trends of 2022, I’ve noticed a few key elements that reign supreme.
Natural inspired materials and finishes
Today’s kitchens are full of materials and finishes inspired by nature. Wood finishes, green and blue hues, and natural stone with heavy veining make an appearance in many cooking spaces. Below, you can find a few of my favorite kitchens that incorporate these elements.
Interior Designer: McCroskey Interiors
Wood tones and marble warm up this large, contemporary kitchen. A space like this one is perfect for the neutral lover whose style leans minimalist.
Architect: Inarc Architects
This marble and wood island serves as the focal point of the kitchen. Sleek stools with a low profile provide function without detracting from the beauty of the space. Keeping accessories to a minimum allows the finishes in this kitchen to make a strong statement.

Interior Designer: Melanie Millner
Beautiful blues add a moody touch to this kitchen’s home bar station. Don’t be afraid to go a bit bold with color; this shade is so sophisticated.
If you prefer something less daring, a gray-blue like this one is still an excellent way to make an impact with color. Paired with a soapstone island, it looks update and high-end.
Interior Designer: Kelly Cook
Quirky portrait art and tall branches add personality to this kitchen.

Natural stone with heavy veining serves as a work of art in this kitchen. We can all agree that doing the dishes would be more glamorous in a sink like this one.
ORGANIC FOrMS
Organic touches, such as curved shapes and bold textures, are another one of the main kitchen design trends of 2022.
Interior Designer: Blainey North
A curved light fixture plays to the shape of this rounded kitchen island. Black and white marble adds sophistication to this space.
INCREASED STORAGE AND FUNCTION

While kitchens should of course be aesthetically pleasing, they must also be functional. The more storage available in a space, the better. Today, we’re seeing more custom storage options, less upper cabinetry, and distinct, zoned areas for food prep.

Interior Design: Jason Arnold Interiors
While upper cabinetry is not a part of this kitchen, there is still plenty of valuable storage to be found. An expansive island makes it easy for the entire family to gather and assist in the cooking process.
Interior Designer: McCroskey Interiors
Here, stylish open shelving adds function and charm to the kitchen. Simple, neutral colored canisters and accents prevent the shelves from appearing too cluttered.
MARBLE LEDGES AND SHELVES
I’ve also noticed an increased use of marble ledges and shelves paired with a marble backsplash. Whether cabinets are neutral or painted a bright color, marble remains en vogue.
Interior Designer: Cochineal Design
Here, aubergine colored cabinetry looks extra luxe when paired with a marble backsplash and accompanying ledge. Do not hesitate to pair more vibrant hues with marble; the result can look stunning!
What have you noticed to be key kitchen design trends of 2022?

Adding a Statement Headboard to the Bedroom https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/adding-a-statement-headboard-to-the-bedroom/ https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/adding-a-statement-headboard-to-the-bedroom/#respond Mon, 28 Mar 2022 12:36:48 +0000 https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/?p=36363 We all know that the headboard is more than just a functional feature in the bedroom. Headboards provide added comfort when lounging in bed and help make a space appear more complete, but they also serve as a means for making a major style statement. Whether you’re designing your primary bedroom, a child’s room, or the guest bedroom, you truly can’t go wrong with a headboard that wows.

If you’re fortunate enough to have a bedroom with extra high ceilings, think about going tall when it comes to the headboard. In my Contemporary City Townhouse project, I incorporated an oversized headboard in the bedroom for a dramatic touch. I stuck to a neutral color palette so as not to overwhelm the space, but there is nothing wrong with opting for bold fabric if that’s more your style. Tall headboards like these are also excellent for concealing noise—that’s why you’ll find them in many luxe hotels, too!

However, adding a statement headboard of this scale is not feasible in every bedroom, which is why I also draw inspiration from beautiful but smaller sized options as well. Take a look at a few of my favorites below.

Horizontal

Image

If your style leans contemporary with a bit of glamour, an oversized, velvet headboard couldn’t be a better pick. This one expands beyond the bed frame for added extravagance.

Scalloped

Image

Designer Kit Kemp, the brainchild behind the Firmdale Hotels in NYC and London, is known for her use of tall, scalloped headboards full of pattern. Pops of pattern are always welcome in the bedroom; by no means does it have to be a space devoid of color entirely. This playful, British-inspired look is having a major resurgence as of late.

Half Moon

Image

But if you’re feeling more modern, you can also choose to go circular when selecting a statement headboard. For example, designer Kelly Wearstler included half circle headboards in her rooms at the Proper Hotel in Santa Monica. The end result is moody in the best way possible. Plus, it demonstrates that even neutrals can be used to make a bold statement.

Which style of statement headboard are you most drawn to?

Why I Love Displaying Leaning Art https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/why-i-love-displaying-leaning-art/ https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/why-i-love-displaying-leaning-art/#respond Tue, 22 Feb 2022 15:46:34 +0000 https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/?p=36316 What is a home without art? Every space should feature at least one eye-catching drawing, painting, or photograph. But I’ll let you in on a little secret: There’s absolutely nothing wrong with displaying leaning artwork atop a table or on a shelf. While you’ll of course want to have some artwork that hangs on the walls, you don’t need to go this route with every piece.

Image

I find that leaning art adds visual interest to a space while also making a space feel lived in and laid back. And there are many ways to go about leaning pieces. If you’d like, you can layer leaning art and hanging art within the same vignette, as seen above, or incorporate two leaning works.

Image

Leaning art can also look ultra charming on a nightstand. Plus, it makes it super easy to switch out frames and prints as you wish, no extra nail holes necessary. Artwork can also be a way to distinguish “his” nightstand from “hers” and reflect individual interests and favorite color palettes.

Image

I also really like the look of  displaying leaning artwork in front of a mirror. That way, you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a functional mirror and beautiful art.

Other places to lean artwork include them mantel, atop a short hutch, and on open shelves in the kitchen. Adding art to these spaces will give your home more personality and warmth. Whether you purchase works on your travels or while visiting local shops or galleries is up to you. However, I advise that you only bring art into your home that has meaning and significance to you and your family, anything that is mass produced likely does not. That said, art doesn’t need to cost a fortune to look lovely in a home. Consider supporting emerging artists in your community or via Etsy. Small business owners will be forever grateful for your support and produce pieces for every style and budget.

When selecting artwork to lean, don’t worry too much about size. Larger and smaller pieces alike will look wonderful. Just keep pieces to scale with the furniture item on which they’re sitting. Longer dressers and floating shelves may be able to accommodate more substantial works, while smaller ones will shine on the nightstand or bar cart.

If you haven’t already been displaying leaning artwork in your home, my hope is that now you will be influenced to do so. The end result couldn’t be better.

Styling Vintage Dressers Throughout the Home https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/styling-vintage-dressers-throughout-the-home/ https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/styling-vintage-dressers-throughout-the-home/#respond Tue, 18 Jan 2022 17:21:13 +0000 https://www.lauracaseyinteriors.com/?p=36286 When it comes to versatile furniture pieces, vintage dressers are always at the top of my list. They can be incorporated to a number of spaces throughout the home: bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, and even bathrooms! Whether you inherited a vintage dresser from a relative or have sourced your own, you’ve truly hit the jackpot. Below are five of my favorite examples of styling vintage dressers throughout the home.

Styling Vintage Dressers in the Bathroom:

The poolhouse bath.

Image

Designer Ralph Lauren is known for his well-curated, traditional style. Even his bathroom reflects this aesthetic, with a vintage dresser placed front and center. This dressing table setup is excellent for either gender and is both functional and chic.

Styling Vintage Dressers as Bars:

Image

If you’re looking for an alternative to the traditional bar cart, note that a vintage dresser makes for a beautiful drink table. Artist Josh Young designed the above setup in his own (former) home in Chicago. Simply place a tray on top of the dresser and display all of your favorite liquor bottles and mixers. If you have extra space, you can also set out other accessories such as elegant glassware, coasters, or an ice bucket. Your guests will feel right at home and ready to serve themselves at any time!

Styling Vintage Dressers in the Entryway:

Image

Why not place a vintage dresser in your entryway? This is an excellent choice for those who are less inclined to use a modern-style console table but still need a place to set keys, mail, and the like by the front door. Plus, the dresser drawers offer useful storage for everything from outerwear to pet gear.

Styling Vintage Dressers in the Living Room:

Image

Fill an empty space in the living room by placing a vintage chest next to the fireplace. It can easily be cleared off to become a serving station when guests are over and it provides useful storage, too.

Styling Vintage Dressers in the Bedroom:

Instagram

A vintage dresser also makes for a stunning nightstand. Keep accessories simple to allow the wooden piece to do the talking. Ample drawer space ensures that typical bedside clutter can be tucked out of sight.

How would you style a vintage dresser in your space?
